Music
“We have all poured a dram and I just wanted to hear and play 'Leaving Strathconon' - we then poured another and played Hank Williams. I have such fond memories of a Sunday afternoon about 6 years ago, when we drank too much whisky and played old records. Music and song mattered to him. So much mattered to him. The world will be so much more diminished without him.”
— Calum MacDonald
Calum wrote Leaving Strathconon when Dennis and his family left Scotland for South Africa. The song was featured on Runrig’s 2001 album The Stamping Ground.
MacLeod’s Favourites
Music played such an important role in Dennis’s life. He got such pure joy from listening to the songs he loved. He spent much of his time in his office scouring YouTube for long-lost tunes. We’d often hear him bellowing along off-note in his office. The grin that spread his face when he heard one of his favourites during a dinner party was contagious. He’d hop up on his feet, often in his tartan trews, and serenade his guests. If they were lucky and an Elvis tune came on, he’d snarl his lip and pull out the knee knocking moves.
Dennis in his trews before being sent back up by Glynis to change his mismatched outfit. Can’t blame the poor man, he’s colourblind!
Is it a dance or a duel?! Dennis and good friend Nairn MacEwan shared a love for Scottish music.
